Neighborhood Events

This years Neighborhood Clean-up day turned out to be a great success.  Special thanks goes out to CONO who paid for one of our dumpsters and Waste Management who donated the other dumpster.

We also wanted to thank the following volunteers for taking time out of their day to help out: Jim Pittman, Dick & Flo Wolfrum, Mel & Tom Elliott, Doug Koldenhoven, Che’ & Aiden Frey, Donny Horning, Jim Wilson, Mark Mueller, Bill Spindler & Jim Patterson.

We had 13 residents use the dumpsters, as well as we helped haul away several trimmings and trash from other residents.  We feel this goes a long way at helping clean up our neighborhood and bringing the neighborhood closer together.

Yorkshire Ladies "Yarn and Darn" Group

Decades ago, when the Gazette Carrier delivered the paper on horseback, the Ladies of Yorkshire started meeting "Monday mornings for coffee, sewing, and talk." They named themselves the "Yorkshire Yarn and Darns". Many had young children, which they just brought along to the meetings.

Roberta Povelite founded this tradition, which is still going strong today. "It keeps the neighborhood close knit," said Flo Wolfrum, pun intended. It's a long-lasting tradition that helps keep the social fabric of Yorkshire Estates well sewn-up. And in case you're wondering, some of the original "Yarn and Darns" -- Roberta, Flo, and Cammy -- are still going strong, too.

Over time, the horseback Carrier disappeared, and most of the ladies put away their needles and threads. Now they just enjoy getting together for coffee, tea and goodies; and of course telling yarns and ... perhaps ... saying a few darns. Under their breaths, of course.

The "Yarn and Darn" Ladies meet on the first Mondays of each month (unless holidays and such not interfere).

The Yorkshire Ladies Yarn ‘n Darn: Still going strong!

Once a month, a neighbor from Yorkshire hosts the monthly “Yarn ‘n Darn” gathering.  Unlike the old days, when they actually sewed while their young kids played about their feet, at gatherings these days the ladies swap yarns, share darns, and enjoy good camaraderie and food.

It is a long-standing tradition that has endured the tests of time.  If you are a lady, and live in Yorkshire, your participation is encouraged.  It’s a great way to meet your neighbors, and catch-up on the yarns and darns.

Bonnie Hart hosted the “Yarn ‘n Darn” gathering this May 2018.  She and her husband — “Chef Monte” — prepared a few dishes for the event:

Strawberry-Banana-Walnut Bread

Zucchini-Nut Bread

Assorted Cream Cheeses

Assorted Jams

Beef and Vegetable Soup

Split Pea and Ham Soup

Turkey-Noodle Vegetable Soup

Italian Sausage and Egg Casserole

Fresh Berry Compote with Sabayon Sauce

Coffee

Tea

Orange Juice

Don’t worry, not all such gatherings are so elaborate!  Crackers ‘n cheese are perfectly acceptable, too; or whatever you, the hostess, chooses to serve.

What’s important is the camaraderie, the chance to meet your neighbors, and of course, the inevitable “yarn” or “darn” that’s slipped into the conversation.

AVOIDING SCAM AND FRAUD ATTEMPTS

  1. Never give out personal financial information. Beware of phony business calls and emails.
  2. Stop international fraud. Deal locally whenever possible.
  3. Watch for buyers who offer more than your asking price and who ask to have money wired or handed to them. Fake cashier checks and money orders are common.
  4. Trust your instincts. Be wary of someone using an escrow service or agent to pick up merchandise or conduct other transactions you have advertised.
